Abstract:

A storage server for continuous media is usually based on disk arrays like RAID. However, this kind of architecture does not provide any flexibility and scalability which are essential for storage server in multimedia applications.

Cluster system is emerging as a widely-accepted high performance computing platform due to high speed networking and associated OS technology. It provide flexibility and scalability in terms of computing performance. Cluster system can also be considered as a promising storage server which provides flexibility and scalability in terms of I/O performance as well as I/O capacity.

We are currently developing a scalable storage server based on a Pentium PC cluster system interconnected by Myrinet. This server will be used to store continuous media such as video and audio.

Windows NT is considered as a basic operating system for the server.
